SR22 Learning Center: What you need to know about the SR22 / SR-22 / SR 22
What is an SR22?
An SR-22 is an insurance certificate that proves that you have auto insurance. Some people call it SR 22 car insurance or a financial responsibility certificate (CFR). The SR22 simply states that you are complying with your state’s car insurance coverage requirements for driving for a specific period of time.
SR22, SR-22, SR 22, form SR22: Is it all the same?
Yes, no matter how you refer to SR22, all the above examples refer to the SR-22 car insurance for drivers.
Do I need an SR22?
You may need SR22 inaurance coverage quotes if you have one of the following driving infractions (your state may also require them for reasons that are not listed):
DUI or DWI
Accidents at fault
Driving without insurance coverage
Driving with a suspended license
Is it considered an SR-22 car insurance?
An SR 22 means that you are meeting the minimum car insurance requirements of your state and it is NOT the car insurance itself. We, as your policy provider, make the “promise” to the state that we are covering your driving for certain circumstances related to automobile insurance.
How much does an SR-22 cost?
At Dairyland®, most of the time, we present your SR22 for free as part of your policy. Some companies and agencies may charge you additional charges or surcharges.
What do I need to do to obtain the SR-22 insurance?
Additional information may vary by state, but in general, it simply indicates that you are a driver who needs an SR 22 presentation when purchasing your policy. You must provide your driver’s license number or other identification number so that we can show up in your state.
Can I get an SR22 today?
Yes, we can issue one immediately. In most states, we can electronically send your SR-22 to the state on the same day.
Can I buy a policy with an SR22 online?
Yes, Dairyland offers policies with an SR22 that can be purchased online. We also offer many other coverage options that can be added to your policy, according to your needs.
How long is an SR 22?
Most states require drivers to have SR22 coverage along with an insurance policy for approximately three years. This may vary depending on the state or circumstances, so be sure to check the requirements of your state.
What happens if my policy is canceled?
If your SR-22 expires, your insurance company should contact the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This could result in the loss of your driver’s license or, depending on your state of residence, other consequences. Making timely payments will help prevent an SR26 from being sent to the state. An SR26 cancels the SR22.
Will an SR22 increase my insurance?
With many companies, yes, but not with Dairyland. In general, simply having an SR-22 file on your policy will not affect your car insurance premium in Dairyland.
What types of SR 22 certificates are there?
There are three types of SR22 insurance:
Operator: an operator certificate is designed for drivers who borrow or rent a car, but do not own a car. This is sometimes used with a non-proprietary automobile insurance policy.
Owner: the owner’s form is for those who own and drive their own car.
Operator / Owner: An Operator / Owner form is a combined form that applies to those who own their own car, but also borrow or rent one to drive occasionally.
Can I get an SR-22 if I do not have a car?
Yes. You can get SR22 insurance if you do not own a vehicle with our non-proprietary automobile insurance policy.
Does my state require an SR 22?
Each state has its own SR-22 coverage requirements for drivers, which are subject to change. If you are not sure of these requirements, we recommend that you contact the Insurance Department of your state.
